Mountain Rug - About NepalGracious People Struggling in PovertyNepal has been a constitutional monarchy for more than 240 years. Recently there was an historic election that replaced the king with a democratically elected government. Time will tell how the elected Maoist party will operate and improve the situation politically and economically. Meanwhile, Nepal remains one of the poorest nations on Earth with the majority of the people surviving on less than $3 per day. Yet even with the problems facing the Himalayan kingdom the people remain proud and positive. Smiles and goodwill are the way of the land. In the most impoverished mountain villages foreigners are often greeted warmly and treated as family. The people of Nepal struggle through conditions that are far below western standards of income, medical care, access to safe drinking water, education, and basic comforts. The resilience of the Nepali people makes them so special, and improving their futures is a deeply rewarding pursuit. Their faith helps keeps them strong; most are Hindu and Buddhist. The religious traditions play into the richness of the culture. And, contrasts are overwhelming - remoteness and congested cities. The world's highest mountains contrast the endangered rhinos in the sun-baked lowlands. Daily struggles are forgotten in broad smiles and offerings of food, tea, and conversation. The artistic history of this country is powerfully beautiful as well. Tibetan rug making is part of the fascinating history and land of Nepal. |
